January 8, 2017:
This week I learned that if you are a married college student you could receive more federal funding to help pay for school. I thought this was interesting because I do not see how a marital status changes the amount of money you make, unless you combine both incomes, but in that case you would get less funding.

I encountered a situation this week that has left me thinking about how heavily important education is viewed by other people. I was visiting my boyfriend and one of his friends says, “How did a college girl like you, end up with a high school drop out like him?” I was a bit shocked that someone could just come out and say that, but it made me think about how people usually assume and expect people with degrees to end up with a person who also has a college degree. It seems as if this person completely ignored other characteristics such as, personality, work ethic, religious views, and other things that could possibly attract you to someone else.

Reactions and emotions about the election are still felt very strongly and are still prominent. I do not to voice any political opinion on social media, but I found an article on Facebook about Donald Trump that I liked, and decided to repost it. I have a friend who strongly dislikes him and because she saw my post, she unfriended me on Facebook and stopped talking to me. I thought it was very upsetting how political difference can cause such strong and drastic reactions, to the point where friendships and even marriages can end.

As I was having a conversation with my roommate, the common topic of race and skin color came up. She stated her opinion that she believes that it is more looked down on if a white woman date a black man than if a white man dates a Hispanic woman. She also stated that she believe that racism is not necessarily based on race, instead it is based on skin color.

This week while visiting my friend’s mom, she was asking me a lot of questions: what was I in school for, what did I have planned after school, and then an infamous question popped up: “Where are your parents from?” I have to repeat myself about 3 times, because she can’t quite catch what I was saying. I said both of my parents are from El Salvador. She felt a bit embarrassed because she didn’t know where it was and by her reaction, I doubt she has ever heard of it before. She was embarrassed and she felt as if she was being insensitive. I think because she is a white woman from rural Georgia, she felt as if she had to try her best to not say something that could possibly offend me.

This passed week I experienced something similar to what my friend told me a couple weeks ago (news item from Jan. 29). As I was eating with my boyfriend's family and his mom says "I don't feel like you're from another race". I was at loss of words, not because it offended me, but because I was kind of upset at myself. I thought maybe I didn't do a good job at keeping and representing my Hispanic culture. After analyzing the whole conversation entirely, I think it came back to what my roommate said, she didn't think of me as a different race because I was the same color as them, white.

There is a constant controversy on whether the confederate flag is viewed as racism or a representation of pride. The confederate flag was often used during the civil war and now in our current society a lot of people think the flag is still very racist towards black people, while others see it as a symbol for heritage and to not forget those who fought in the war.

A lot of people in metro Atlanta are panicking about these raids. Many people I grew up with are worried to even go to the grocery store. Luckily, both of my parents have acquired their citizenship, and me and my brother were born in the United States, so we do not have to worry about these raids, but it hits so close to home when close friends have to worry about these situations.

Before going to a race where they were have an autism awareness night, I did a little research on what Autism really was. I had only heard a little bit about it on TV, but I wanted to know more. People with autism are actually very smart people. There is a misconception that if they are special needs, they aren’t or can not be smart. It is not that people with autism do not like people; they just need to be approached differently than other people depending on the severity of the severity of their autism.

The wall that is not only separating two different countries, it is also going to separate animals that are endangered and on the verge of extinction. Although this is not the purpose of the wall, these are consequences that are going to take place if the wall that is being proposed is actually built.

Even with as much improvement we have made, as a society all together, there is still gender inequality. Women are underpaid and not given as much benefits as males are. Women do they same jobs as men and are just as qualified and they should be treated equally.

Many people want it to be legal to discriminate against gay people. Some people believe that if it goes against their religion, they should be able to not hire someone/fire them. Others want unequal treatment against them simply because they do not agree with their lifestyle.

I also used to hear this a lot when I was younger too. A lot of teachers thought it would be beneficial for the student to be separated by gender because it would be less of a distraction. I think this is somewhat true, especially in middle school; a lot of students were either boy crazy or girl crazy, and that did distract many students and the separate gender classroom might have helped a lot.

There’s a stereotype that minorities often don’t do well in school or that they simply do not continue their education in college because they don’t have the money to go. This girl is African-American and she has been accepted to various ivy league school and she’s proving these stereotype wrong.

This case has been very controversial. Many people think they should not be sent to jail because they did not kill any one, but others think they should be help accountable for terrorizing little kids. I think they shouldn’t have got that much jail time, when people who rape/kill other people do not even get that much jail time.
